Stage Director: Opera-Theatre-Musicals
Internationally acclaimed performing and recording artist, soprano Maureen O’Flynn has launched her own private voice studio in New York City.
Currently enjoying her 26th successful season as an operatic performer, Maureen O’Flynn is expanding her already popular private lessons in voice and role preparation to students of opera and classical song literature.
Maureen is an adjunct professor at Hartt School of Music, and on the faculty of the Artescenica Encuentro of Saltillo, Mexico. She will continue to offer private lessons in the Berkshires of Massachusetts, and will now also be teaching at the 7th Ave Rehearsal Studios in New York City.
“In my lessons, I focus on not only the vocal technique, but also on the interpretive details of the text, characterization, the diction and inflection of the language—all of which combine to create the tapestry of colors in an artist’s performance.
Every successful singer needs the obvious strength of a solid vocal technique, beginning with the basics of proper breath support and control, correct vowel construction, and a tension-free production of sound. Opera is also a theatrical discipline, and a singer must deliver the goods not just vocally, but dramatically and interpretively as well.
Singing is an art of communication and expression. To develop into a true artist, a singer must create a marriage of both the vocal and the dramatic—one doesn’t live without the other, whether it is in opera, musical theatre, lieder or art song. Singing classically is a full body sport, and singers need to know how to use their entire body in support of their performance. Although not thought of as such, opera singers are athletes!
In my studio, I strive to create a safe and secure environment where a singer can be free to discover their own strengths and to work on their weaknesses. I take them through this work as someone who has gone through what they are going through; someone who has both compassion and the tools to help them move forward on their particular path.”
